A Week of Sustainable Solutions 2018

It’s hard to wrap all activities during #SustainableSolutions2018 in the short story. Too many good and interesting activity in there. Sustainable Solutions 2018 had many activities and talks that motivate us to find the solution to our earth problems.

What do you think?

Do the earth problems our responsibility to solve?

A week of the event is not an easy thing to do. Need an extra effort and patient to handle everything in control. In my previous blog, I talk about behind the scene of the event, something that people did not see during the event.  So, in this blog I will talk more about the event, all kind of activities and talks that interesting (BASED ON MY POINT OF VIEW)

Handling such a big event is not easy, especially on the day we will need to handle everything, from the simple and detail things until complex and unexpected things. I know it sounds like I’m being too much, but that’s what I feel. Luckily, before the event, we have volunteer recruitment. I personally happy and grateful to have them as a team.  A day before the event start, we invite all to come to  Green School to do the final briefing and introduce them to the school. Also, they help us on our final preparation and help us to do the final check of everything. THEY ARE THE BEST!!! Extra hands during the big event like this are really important. Cause we want the event perfect for everyone. Don’t worry, we did not force them to work every day until night. During the event, we give them the flexibility to join the talks or activity as long as there is someone willing to replace their spot at that time.69019b4b-531f-4dc1-8b31-35827cba2452 2

If you are wondering what the purpose of Sustainable Solutions, can you guess what is the purpose of the event?

In my point of view, currently, I see a lot of people did not aware of the #environmentalissues. They did not realize (or maybe pretend that the did not know) that environmental problem is one of a global problem. In Sustainable Solutions, we try to invite a good speaker that can provide a solution or suggestion. In this case, we can think about what we should do next. In this year Sustainable Solutions is more special than last year because we have five-days event and also, we are celebrating 10th year anniversary of Green School. I am so lucky that I can be a part of event team who handle this big and special event.

I will tell you some of the activities that super interesting based on my point of view. For example, on the third day, one of the workshops that take my attention was Canang Making. I always curious about a new culture and tradition about the place that I live. Canang is a daily offering made by Balinese to represent their gratefulness to their GOD. According to what I heard, a good Canang has 4 important parts; such as peporosan, ceper, raka-raka, and sampian urasari.  Peporosan is the center of the Canang or we can call it the based and core material of the Canang. It consists betel leaf, lime, gambier, and betel nuts. All materials in peporosan symbolize the Trimurti, the three major Hindu GODs, Shiva is symbolized by lime, Vishnu is symbolized by betel nut, and Brahma is symbolized by gambier. Canang sari is covered by ceper (a tray made from palm leaf) as a symbol of Ardha Candra. Raka-raka is topped with sampian urasari, which are in turn overlaid by flowers placed in a specific direction. Each direction symbolizes a Hindu God :

  • White-colored flowers that point to the east as a symbol of Iswara
  • Red-colored flowers that point to the south as a symbol of Brahma
  • Yellow-colored flowers that point to the west as a symbol of Mahadeva
  • Blue or green colored flowers that point to the north as a symbol of Vishnu

It is really interesting to learn a new culture and see that Balinese people still doing the traditional tradition from their ancestry. Most of the participant was not Indonesian but from countries outside Indonesia. They also share that they are in love with Indonesia since some of the people still doing their traditional culture. Make me think about how many people in Indonesia still practice their traditional culture? How many of us still aware that our culture is our identity? Or are they still aware that we need to protect our culture?

Another new experience that teaches me to be more aware is the activity on the last day of Sustainable Solutions. The day was starting with walking around Sibang Kaja area (an area near Green School) to do an activity called Trash Walk. Trash walk is an activity to collect trash around the area with many people. The purpose of Trash walk is to do the clean-up of the area and increase the awareness to the young generation about the impact of the trash. There are 130 people join trash walk and collected 90kg trash including the plastic bag, plastic cup and some trash that belong to the land field.

Trash walk made all the people hungry and ready to eat at the Farmers Market in the Sustainable Solutions. But, all their attention was going to the 4 chefs with different background battling to create a healthy food. It is interesting to see all of the chefs come from different part of the world and prepare their own food. To make the battle more exciting, each chef had limited money to buy their ingredients and also limited time. The final results were amazing. The food totally represents each chef who was coming from around the world.

The celebration of the final day was not stopping there. There was a lot of performance on the field from afternoon to night.  Many musicians come and hypnotize everyone on the field. The performance made all guest, teacher, staff, students and many other people gather on the soccer field. We are singing and dancing until the sun went down and the moon went up to enjoy our party.
